Trunk Highway 336 Connection
Glyndon Township, Minnesota
Project Details:
Houston Engineering performed construction staking for the Minnesota Department of
Transportation (MnDOT) road construction project on the Trunk Highway 336 connection
between U.S. 10 and I-94. Houston provided MnDOT’s contractor, Northern Improvement
Company, with accurate, efficient, and timely staking for this project. Advanced
Global Positioning System (GPS) survey equipment was used to accurately lay out the
many complex curves for the ramps, new mainline road alignments, and frontage roads.
Over two million cubic yards of fill were hauled in for this multi-million dollar
project. When construction was completed, Highway 336 was widened to four lanes between
I-94 and Highway 10. The bridge over I-94 was expanded to four lanes, and bridges were
built over Highway 10 and the adjacent railroad tracks with ramps allowing easy merging
onto the highway.
The improved Highway 10 interchange makes it much easier to get on and off the road,
which is a major advantage for moving traffic. Recent traffic counts show 7,600 cars each
day travel on Highway 336 between Highway 10 and I-94, according to Tom Lundgren, MnDOT
project manager. Projections indicate that 11,500 cars will be zipping across that corridor
in 20 years. “We’re looking to protect the corridor so it processes traffic in a safe and
efficient manner out into the future,” Lundgren said. “In addition, safety concerns about
the intersection at Highway 10 and the nearby railroad crossing—where several accidents
have taken place—are eliminated because traffic passes overhead,” he said. The project now
allows traffic to flow even when a train is moving through the area.
Project Benefits:
- Accurate staking necessary for construction
- Timely, efficient staking provided by skilled personnel using the latest technology
- Fast completion due to addition of supplemental crews as necessary so as not to delay construction
- Safe, efficient traffic flow
